Notice of Race
INTRODUCTION
The Kenya Fireball Association, as the Organising Authority, invites entries for the Fireball Kenya National Championships 2024, known as the “56th Annual Regatta” on the 21st to 23rd July 2024, to be held at Kilifi Boatyard. The Championship forms part of Kilifi Sailing Week.
1 RULES
1.1 The Regatta will be governed by the Rules as defined in The Racing Rules of Sailing.
1.2 The International Fireball Association Class Rules shall apply, except any rule changed by this Notice of Race or the Sailing Instructions, which shall be issued by the Committee at the Regatta.
2 ELIGIBILITY & ENTRY
2.1 The Regatta is open to International Fireball Class boats.
2.2 Boats from other double-handed racing classes may be invited, or apply to the Race Committee, to take part (and be adjusted on PY); such boats may not win any of the main race trophies.
2.3 Competitors shall be current members of the Kenya Fireball Association, or, if they are from overseas, their national Fireball Class Association.
2.4 Entries shall be submitted by completion of the Entry Form to be found on the link at www.kilifi.org (below) by 15th July 2024.
2.5 The Regatta Fee shall be paid by the 15th July 202 by M-Pesa to the Paybill account given on the entry form.
2.6 Competitors are requested to have their boats ready to sail by sunset on Saturday 20th July, ie the day before the Regatta.
3 REGATTA FEES
3.1 The Entry Fee for the Regatta is KES 18,000 per boat.
4 SAILING SCHEDULE
4.1 There shall be up to twelve races.
4.2 There shall be no more than five races sailed on one day.
4.3 The Race Committee may adjust the Sailing Schedule at its discretion.
Saturday 20th July Preparation of Boats - 10am to 6pm
Sunday 21st July Regatta Briefing - 10.00
5 MEASUREMENT
5.1 Boats will not be measured at the event.
5.2 Helms and crews have an obligation to ensure that, as far as they are aware, their boat meets the rules of the Fireball Class.
6 SUBSTITUTION OF CREWS AND EQUIPMENT
6.1 Substitution of crews or equipment will be on approval of the Race Committee, but will not be allowed unless either is damaged.
7 SAILING INSTRUCTIONS
7.1 The Sailing Instructions will be provided to participants prior to the event available at the Boatyard.
8 VENUE
8.1 The regatta venue will be the Kilifi Boatyard, Kilifi, Kenya
8.2 Racing will be conducted in the sailing area known as “The Bowl” some 2km to the west of the Boatyard.
9 THE COURSES
9.1 The racing will be conducted on triangle-sausage-triangle courses.
9.2 Course diagrams will be provided in the Sailing Instructions.
9.3 The target time for each race will be 30 minutes for the first boat.
9.4 Target times may be adjusted without notice at the discretion of the OOD.
10 SCORING
10.1 Four races are required to be completed to constitute a series.
10.2 Discards:
• When four or fewer races have been completed, a boat’s Regatta score will be the total of her race scores.
• When between five and nine races have been completed, a boat’s Regatta score will be the total of her race scores excluding her worst score.
• When ten or more races have been completed, a boat’s Regatta score will be the total of her race scores excluding her two worst scores.
11 PRIZES
11.1 Prizes will be awarded as described below:
• Winner: The Fireball National Champions’ Salver
• Second: The Fireball National Runner Up Plate
• First Lady
• The Ancient Mariner: Highest placed helm over 50
• The Chaos Cup: The oldest boat to compete
• The Balls Up Trophy: for the biggest balls up
No competitor may win more than 1 prize, except for the prestigious Balls’ Up!
11.2 Other prizes may be awarded at the whim of the Organising Committee.
12 DISCLAIMER OF LIABILITY
12.1 Competitors participate in the Regatta entirely at their own risk. See Rule 4, Decision to Race.
12.2 The Organising Authority will not accept any liability for material damage or personal injury or death sustained in conjunction with or prior to or during or after the Regatta.
13 SAFETY
13.1 Each boat shall be equipped with effective personal buoyancy for each crew member. The crew shall wear the personal buoyancy properly secured outside all clothing except that a close fitting, bib or vest may be worn outside the personal buoyancy.
13.2 Attention is drawn to Rule 1.2 and Rule 3.
14 AMENDMENTS
14.1 Any amendment to this Notice of Race will be posted at the event and brought to Competitors’ attention at the Briefing.
